In the 1950s, Konovalenko was a young set designer at St. Petersburg's Specifically, it was the exhibition regarding the Russian folk life gem carvings of Vasily Konovalenko that caught my eye. I didn’t know it at the time, but the museum is home to the most significant collection of these gem-carving sculptures in the world- actually the only collection on public display outside of Moscow. Vasily Konovalenko (koh-noh-vuh-len-koh) was born in 1929 in Petrivka, Ukraine (just north of the Black Sea). After earning a degree in art and architecture, he became a stage designer for the Donetsk Opera and Ballet Theatre. Vasily Konovalenko created a number of miniature sculptures out of the mixed semi-precious stones, sometimes with an addition of wood and other gifts from nature. Semi-precious malachite, rhodonite, jade, jasper, agate, opals contain an amazing color palette, the richest structural variety.
